Evolution of European Weather Satellites
More than 30 years ago, the first meteorological satellite Meteosat revolutionised weather forecasting. Since then, predictions have become more and more reliable. Today, a three-day-forecast has a reliability of 90 percent, and the highest temperature of a day can be predicted two days in advance with an average error margin of only 1.3 degrees. Current European weather satellites are state of the art, and still, researchers are working on the next generation, to forecast the weather of tomorrow. This story recalls the evolution of weather forecasting and presents the upcoming improvements. credit: ESA source: www.esa.int

The satellite images are thermal images which show clouds. They are placed on top of a base map. The satellite images are taken from satellites belonging to the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites EUMETSAT and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA. Most of the images are combined from two satellites. Icelandic Meteorological Office en.vedur.is This video shows the movement of cyclones and atmospheric blocking over Europe with 1 to June 14.
